Sylvia Plath's poetry and prose is highly relavatory. By that, I mean she found writing cathartic. She pours her emotions onto the page, her poetry allow her release. Because she suffered from depression, her poetry is often very dark. However, to say Plath's poetry is only depressing is just scratching the surface. For example, she copes with her challenging relationship with her father in "Daddy" (Plath's father died when she was 8, many critics see this as a turning point in her life) and she delves into the role of women during the 1950s in "The Bell Jar."

I would suggest reading "Ariel" her best poems, written during the frantic months leading up to her suicide as well as her journals, which provide electrifying insights into her life.

Hope this helps. :)

Sylvia Plath, a true depressive. Wrote the Bell Jar to explain her experiences while being seriously depressed while young. Final line refers to the fact that you never know when the bell jar will fall again. The bell jar being like an isolation booth, keeping you seperated from the rest of the world. She wrote poetry for a good part of her life, most of it extremely depressive. Married Ted Hughes, not a happy marriage. Always believed that they probably would have gotten a divorce, but instead, she put her head in the oven to try and commit suicide, thinking that the cleaning lady was coming back. She didn't make it and her husband came home to find her dead.

I suggest you check out her relationship with her husband, her possible schizophrenic condition, as well as the conflicting imagery in many of her poems. The most important thing to remember when dealing with the writings of Plath is that her style changes as the major events in her life occur. Check the dates against the timeline of her life. Also, see if you can find any information about her parents. This should give you a good start.

She was a gifted and fragile person who wrote beautiful poetry. You might want to write about her mental instability.
