When my kids were babies (in the 90's) they said to put the babies on their belly to sleep every night. Then they said side, now they say back or side. If he is having a fit and not comfortable then let him sleep on his tummy....they don't know what causes SIDS...they just keep guessing and changing the game plan. You could try rolling a cloth diaper up and wedging it between his belly and the bed to keep him sorta on his side, yet low enough for him to be comfortable. Pretty soon he'll be big enough to move himself into his preferred sleeping position anyway. Good luck & best wishes

When he crys is it a cry of pain?

The reason i ask is because i know that some babies have a disorder that causes acual pain if they do not sleep on their stomach (i forgot what it is called) The doctors acualy had my son sleep on his belly because if this. also some babies may have reflux wich the pain is offten reduced by laying on their bellies. If it is a cry of pain contact your son's DR and talk to him about it..
"Tummy or Side Sleeping
Research has shown that babies reflux less when on their left sides and tummies because the stomach acid is furthest from the esophagus. Talk to your doctor about swaddling and putting your baby on his left side or getting a sleep monitor so you can allow baby to sleep on his tummy. A bolster-style baby sleep positioner is basically two pieces of foam attached together by a piece of fabric. The baby is laid on the fabric in between the foam bolsters so that he cannot roll over. A bolster-style baby sleep positioner may be helpful in keeping your baby on his side but be sure your baby is able to pull up his legs if he has gas. Many bolster-style baby and infant sleep positioners pin the baby in such a way that they do not have enough mobility to move around and resolve gas on their own."

My infant has been doing the same since 3 months old, he is now seven months and still does it despite continued efforts to roll him over onto his side or back - he hates it!! Even in a deep sleep, he turns back over. I simply make sure there are no other blankets in the crib and dress him in a warm sleeper. He breathes fine and sleeps better if left alone. I think if you take the precautions against sids. I.E. new matress, clean bedding, no toys or loose bedding etc..,you';ve done all you can do. Short of sleeping with your child, there is nothing else you can do.

The risk of SIDS is decreased by 50% if the child is placed on his back to sleep. I would try everything possible to always have your baby sleep on his back. He'll get used to it!

Also, the sleep positioners are not so safe. There should be nothing in the crib or bassinet with the baby. No stuffed animals, pillows or blankets. Bumpers are controversial.

It's okay; just keep rotating him so that he gets accostumed to different positions and doesn't end up with a flat head. When those times come that you cannot put him in a different position, be sure that his head is to the side. My kids slept in all sorts of positions and I must say I never made a habit out of them sleeping on their backs; only once in a while, my favorite was on the stomach with their heads to the side. They've all grown to be quite healthy.

You have to take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Yes don't put your baby on his belly in loose blankets that he can scrunch up and make into a great smothering ball of cloth.

BUT all my children were tummy sleepers and none of them died from it because I went to the store and got those elastic strappy things to secure sheets down. You can have a nice cotton blanket or two under the sheet or a quilted crib under pad.. just so it don't get nasty from sweat. Now I put my babies in warm footed sleepers in the winter and lighter weight sleepers with socks in the summers. Most of the time they only need a light little blanket to be comfortable. Adjust your baby's sleep wear to the room temp. If the room the baby sleeps in is cooler than comfortable for him, put on undershirts and socks to make the sleepers warmer. Call me old-fashioned but I can't make myself lay a baby on its back and let it choke to death on its own curdled milk burp ups. A chokeing baby while you are sleeping don't wake you up. How many times has the baby burped up on your shoulder without any big noise or crying? Every time I got up for a diaper change in the night and saw some burp up.. I thought to myself.. thank God the baby was on his tummy. The sheet straps work if you keep them taught. Keep the Faith.

I have four kids and all of them were tummy sleepers. I asked their doctor about it,and she said as long as there are no blankets or anything to mess with their breathing they are fine. I'm a tummy sleeper too,and I have sleep apnea. When I am on my tummy I don't stop breathing like other positions.

My kids liked their bellies also. I put them on their sides as much as possible and then they would roll to stomachs on their own.

Buy one of those pillows and prop him on his side, he may like this better. My kids also liked to sleep on their stomachs but I only let them do it if I was in the room watching them. It is not worth the risk of SIDS.
