A torrent file is typically about 5-40K, occasionally reaching 400K. The file data that the torrent indexes can be anything from 1 byte to a practically infinite amount. I have seen torrents that index over 60GB before.
The large majority of bittorrent clients will let you choose which files in a torrent you wish to download. I recommend uTorrent as it is small, fast and never kills your internet connection like azureus and bittornado (to name but a few) sometimes do.

The Torrent file itself only takes a few bytes. The actual file it is linked to can be big or small, depending on what it is.

A torrent doesn't take any space considering that is how you are getting information, not the information itself. The information takes up as much space as is clarified. i.e. DVD's= 1-5GB, CD's=800 MB max
