Has anyone else ever wondered why typically(but not always) the husbands have less expensive wedding rings. Alot of women (but not all) have their rings appraised and some feel disappointed or unapprciated if they don't get a ring that atleast looks glamorous and expensive. However, they don't feel as though buying their soon to be husbands dull and comparativly inexpensive rings is a sign that they don't care about or appreciate him. This is 2007 and supposedly everyone wants to be EQUAL. Tradition shouldn't have much baring because traditionally women getting married was a ceremony for basically taking her from her family and GIVING her to her husband. Also traditionally women were mostly housewives. So what's the deal? This is alittle (alot) off topic but is it ok to hold on to tradition (chivalry, gentlemen-like and lady-like behavior and all of that other crap) when u r getting something good out of it even though it's not based on equality.

I'm not talking engagement rings per se. However if the woman proposes than yes that can be included. Does she expect an engagement ring even though she proposed. Silly!

Pleasing your wife is all fine and dandy, but what about pleasing your husband. Alot of people would claim sex is pleasing your husband but that's the biggest load of crap i've ever heard.

The ring used to be a bargain because women aren't EXPECTED to clean anyones home or cook anyones food or raise anyones kids but their own unless they want to. The housewife thing basically over so giving her a ring for her "services" is unreal. And alot of men do place sentimental value on the ring. Some guys don't but some women don't either.

I'm sorry but some of the things that i've heard r insane. The sexism, the contradictory logic, the complete lack of reason. I can't believe that so many people still think that these sexist ideas are "ok." Thanks for letting me know that I can buy my gf's sentimental attachment to me with a ring.

Face facts, you aren't going to win here. You simply must accept the fact that there will be a double standard.

Understand that when dealing with women on such issues, logic will not prevail. And you will not convince her - no matter what you say.

My approach was this: I bought her the ring she wanted, but I will not wear a ring at all. I don't even wear a watch, let alone a ring.

She ain't happy, but at least she didn't have to come up with $5,000 like I did.

Traditionally the man is supposed to woo the woman by adorning her in lavishing jewelery. Men usually aren't a big fan of fancy jewelry and diamonds anyway. It is the turn of the century tho and times have changed where hardly anyone sticks to tradition. I have seen plenty of men with deacked out wedding rings. I think that it is based on the couple and what they think or believe to be true. In todays world it does not matter. Have your ring as lavish and stunning as you want!

women place a higher sentimental value on it thus men are willing to pay more for it to apease the woman

men place a low emotional value on it thus it's less expensive

"traditionally women were mostly housewives" if you think about it, that explains alot. women keep your home, raise your children, prepare your food, and satisfy your needs.
that little ring is a bargain when you considder what you get in exchange.

the ring exemplifies your ability to provide for her

also, men usually don't care about the shiny sparkly expensive stuff..
for example, my husband WANTED a titanium ring with a little diamond chip in it. he likes to scuba dive and alot of his dive equipment contains titanium, so it's personal to him. the ring cost $42.94 at wal mart and he loves it.

my engagement ring was in the neighborhood of $850 and it's nice. not too big, but not too small. a fine example of the moderation that has become our lives.

no matter what anybody says about equality;
the sexes are not equal - and never will be

Most mens wedding bands don't contain diamonds and/or other precious gems. Sometimes a woman's wedding ring consists of two bands; an engagement ring and the actual wedding ring.

Most womens' rings are diamond-filled.

Most mens' rings are one single metal.

I've found a wedding band for women that cost just as much as a man's wedding band because it was one metal.
