Why were Great Lakes regions so important?

If you look at a map, The Great lakes were a barrier between the US and Canada. Also It would hurt the Midwest by keeping the upper states from the New York Harbor. The Erie Canal was a transport of goods from the Great Lakes to New York. The economy would be hurt.

Because Canada was basically an English colony and the Great Lakes was a boarder line, control of that waterway would have given the British a clear strategic advantage over the northern front.

The British were very dependent on the Great Lakes area for the movement of troops and supplies for the defence of Upper Canada.

because they were a natural water way. transport of whole sale goods moved up and down these great lakes.Chicago started as a trading post along the Canadian/American border. also most mountains and lakes serve as a natural borders between conflicted neighbors. after all its pretty hard to shoot at your next door neighbor across a wide stretch of water.
