I have a black, one-piece racerback functional Speedo swimsuit right now, but it is wearing out and I really need a new one. My husband wants me to wear a bikini, but I am 100% certain that I don't have the body for a bikini, no matter what he says. My question is whether a tankini would be a good compromise. I need support (36D bra size) and something that won't make me look like a pathetic laughing-stock. I'm 41, well-toned but overweight enough to be self-conscious about it (maybe 15-25 lbs. over the ideal range for my height and age) and roughly hourglass shaped. I have toned muscles but also a bit of a belly, and I work out maybe 5X/week with weights and swimming. Will a tankini support me enough to allow me to swim laps for exercise but also look reasonable enough that people won't point and laugh at me behind my back? Anyone have experience with wearing tankinis and can tell me their advantages and pitfalls? Thanks!

If you really like to swim you might be disapointed with a tankini and it sounds like you are a swimmer. A tankini is not good for lap swimming because it drags. If you are doing swimming for fitness then just get another speedo 1 piece or a fittness 2 piece. They have a great deal of choices http://www.speedo.com you might want a fitness tankini

Tankini's are safe, try some different styles on. Since you describe the hour glass figure, showing off your skinny waist will be an attractive change for your husband. If he likes skin and want to see you in a two piece, the tankini is for you!

I think a good tankini is a great idea. It is just sexy enough to appease your husband, but comfy enough for you. I love tankinis. When you are young, you wear one-piece, when you are too old to wear a one piece, you wear a tankini, then a bikini, then as you get older, a tankini, then a one-piece. They are kind of a bridging over the gap swimsuit.

Go to speedousa.com I believe they have some tankini's, they are very cute and I think they would give you more support too.
It can't hurt to check them out. I always like the way speedo fit compared to other brands. Already ordered my daughters for summer from there.
There is a cute tropical print tankini in a steel color( lightest shade) that is on sale now, in all sizes. Check under sales at that sight. Prices are hard to beat. good luck!

I would go for a cute one piece swimsuit...perhaps something with cut-out sides to accentuate your curves, but still hide the tummy. I love tankinis, but frankly, they are going out of style...too bad. Everyone seems to be heading for a chic monokini, or bandeau one-piece these days. They tend to hide the midsection better that a Tankini. If you're bigger on top, you might want to try a halter style for extra support.

I am about your age, and a couple extra pounds from time to time as well, and tankinis have worked very well for me. And they do stay in place well enough for swimming laps, as long as you're a fairly leisurely swimmer rather than a really vigorous one.

Tankinis are the best answer - they look great and support everything.

Just get a one piece. They are pretty cheap at Costco.

I think it doesn't matter all what you said, all that matters is you dress appropriate for the occassion, don't be so revealing, and have some fun.
