Dear friend. I am the one issued the warning to local T.V.Stations 2 hours before Tsunami struck our coast. Still I am unable to understand why the seismic stations failed to issue the warning. They are telling some lam excuse for not alerting in time .My self and the meteorological department sensed the earthquake waves the same time. Their equipment cost some million dollars. The one I used to issue warning was designed by me just for U.S.20 dollars only. Pleas visit the following sites to know everything about tectonic movement during Tsunami.

The two plates that meet in the Indian Ocean collided, causing an earthquake underwater. The energy pushed the water up, forming the tsunami

Wikipedia has some very thorough and updated information on this. The plates involved were the India Plate and the Burma Plate, which they explain in detail in the first third of the article. The opening gives a current 'best estimate' of number of deaths compiled by the UN.

As far as "knowing them" -- I can't say that I know them personally ---but---by the last accounting that I heard --- they were centered very here Indonesia under the Ocean there--- and -- the last accounting of death in this disaster that I heard of was in excess of 200,000 !! Absolutely outrageous !!!
