Well i can't answer your first two for sure, but the last one is more my topic.
One-- The girls, Abigail Willaims, Elizabeth Parris and others would put on these acts to accuse people in the town that did them wrong, they didn't like or wanted to get rid of. Many believe the girls started the entire thing.
Two-- Puritans were so afraid that there would be a threat to their "perfect town" and "perfect religion" they ultimately created one by allowing the girls to carry on and accuse people.
Three-- Others believe Tituba started the entire thing by showing the girls her magic tricks from Barbados....
Basically, the girls are at the root of it all. People said they might have been sick with some sort of fever or had mental issues, but no one can say for sure. They started something that caught on, and grew. They started the fire, and everyone in the town fanned it. Good luck finding stuff out for this, hope i could help...

the puritans didnt go into the woods so they couldn't convert indians, or they just didnt have the power

they persecuted people, so they didnt learn how it was to be persecuted.
