I want to experience Middle Eastern culture and I would like to go to a place that is relatively open. I am also an Oriental dancer and would like to explore professional opportunities in that sense. Mostly I am interested in learning Arabic, and trying to decide on a university for study abroad. Even in the West I am a very nontraditional woman, so I would like to find a place that is tolerant and accepting.

I am going for study abroad purposes, but also to investigate the possibility of dancing as a profession.

I agree with the most said in the answers above.
But - one thing is not mentioned. To move to a Middle Eastern Country you need a SPONSOR! A sponsor can be a company you are working for, an individual with a residence visa, a local or a school.

One of the best places in the Middle East for a woman might be Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It is very open, westernized, tolerant, peacefull, safe for women and offers all kind of opportunities.

If you want to study aboard you have to meet certain criterias which differ from country to country and from school to school.
Decide first where to go, then check out the requirements for different school/universities and who will sponser you.

Well, I think you need to go to the place you make your final decision on moving to for a mini visit first to see if you like it. I would probably say that dubai would probably be a more modern and comfortable country to go to. Jordan is a tolerant place but in my opinion, its not very modern in its thinking. There has been a greater influx of american chain restaurants establishments lately. I am speaking from my opinion only, even though Jordan is considered a modern country, I feel that it is behind with technology. Lacks organization and I am willing to guess that Egypt would be even worse. I have heard stories.
Moving to the middle east is a big step and expect a culture shock. So research as much as you can.

Americans can do well in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

If you consider North Africa to be part of the Middle East (some people do and some do not), then Tunisia is a great place to go. It's considered to be the most liberated Muslim nation.

Good luck to you, that is going to be one seriously tough place to find. Right now there isn't a lot of safe, tolerant, and accepting places in the Middle East.
