I think my best tip would be to sit down with the grocery store circular that comes in the mail and make a menu plan for the week that features the foods on sale. Using this method along with coupons is even more cost effective.
As far as coming up with a set weekly amount to spend on food, track your spending for one month including take out and dining out (don't forget the morning latte) and then you can see what you can cut out/back on and come up with a realistic goal amount.
Hope this helps.

I don't know if your working or not but if you are just right down all of your bills and see how much is going out and how much is left over If it's really tight and you have nothing left than you need to get down to the food banks then you don't have to worry about buying food you just keep stocked up I believe you can go 2 a month at some places you'll be fine If I can help with any other information let me know

Eat real food, nothing processed as much as possible. Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs. Limit things with additives. Eating at home saves tons of money and is healthier too. Drink water. (Sodas, beer, wines and spirits and milk just add to the expense and your waistline.)

Clip coupons and use them at your local store that will double them.
It can be very useful and economical.
Also always go with a list and NEVER go grocery shopping while hungry.
