What are the psychological reasons for a woman choosing a female gynecologist?

I have a friend who's Father had sex with her on a regular bases from the ages of 4 until she moved out at the age of 19. Her step-mother slapped her and called her a tramp when she asked for help. So my friend feels uncomfortable seeing a male gynecologist.She knows that the Dr. isn't sexually molesting her but she is still very uneasy with a male Dr. and she feels like she did as a child. She has been married so she doesn't seem to feel that way with the man sh loves.

A lot of people answered why they would choose a woman gyn. Personally I feel that a woman is gentle because she knows how it feels. But some women may be afraid that if they are attracted to other women they will become aroused. When I was younger I felt more comfortable with a male. Now that I am older and sure of my sexual orientation it does not matter as long as they are a good doctor.

I choose a female gynecologist because I feel she will be more sensitive and understanding as far as the female body is concerned.

I also tend to question the reasons of why men become gynos. My second experience was with a male, and he made me feel very weird and looked me in the eye in a way that made me uncomfortable. He was also rough and it hurt.

Some women feel uncorfortable with a guy looking at their private parts who is not their lover.

I think that is pretty natural. If I were female, I'd probably prefer a woman too.

As a guy, I have not figured out whether I prefer a guy to look at my **** or a woman, in terms of a doctor. Both make me uncomfortable.

Anyway, choose the person that makes you feel most comfortable and you feel is giving you sound care.

My girlfriend preferred a male gyno/ob. She said they always have a female nurse present when in the examine room anyways and they seem to be better at their job. Perhaps because they are the opposite sex, they seem to have more of a interest to learn about there counterpart. She said, she feels more awkward with a female doctor.

We tend to gravitate to people or things that are familiar to us. We like consistencies in our lives and this may include the thought of women being better obgyn's. We also feel that members of the same sex are more capable of understanding sex specific issues. Just like some men prefer male doctors. It may also be an issue of insecurity. If we have someone of an opposite sex in our intimate space we feel they are somehow judging us.

i am more comfortable with a woman doctor. I know it's their job, but i just think of how horny and sexual men are that no matter how professional the guy doc. would be, i'd be so unfomfortable.

it has nothing, nothing , to do with people being subconsciously attracted to women..that's ridiculous, it's about comfort.

Many people do it for comfort they think it would be awkward having a male in that area. Also on a subconcious level some women may be attracted to women.

umm...gee I think its obvious why...I remember being in High School, my friends & I would joke how we would love to be gynocologist....funny...we would then think, ...after a while looking at all those vaginas...you probably would become numb to the situation.........but then, how bout those girls with problems...would you like sticking your head down there ?? UGH!!
