What has changed in the lives of the citizens who now live in the European Union?

Are things better or worse for the average citizen now? Did average citizens have any say about this before it was done?

I think it promotes continuity and secularism. They share common money (in the euro) and have free range of borders. It could be a Utopia of sorts if it wasn't for the extremist threat.
