Well for one retarded is simply not a word that is used anymore. Mentally Handicapped, or Mentally challenged is the correct terminology. As for the personality traits and talking to them, it depends on the form of handicapped. Are they just slow? Are they Downs? Are they ADD? Do they have Cerebal Palsy? To what degree are they handicapped? Any mental handicapp from Autism to Down Syndrome can range many levels of severity. Not to mention that most also come in several forms such as Autism and Cerebal Palsy. Are they behaviorally challenged as well? Are they physically handicapped as well? You need to do more research into what kind of handicap exactly this person has, what form it is, and what severity it is, before anyone can even begin to determine how interaction with them may go.

There are different degrees of mental retardation. There are some that look perfectly normal and can hold down low end jobs just fine.
There are others that have the Downs Syndrome face. Some function very well. There is one that is a Eagle Boy Scout. And there are some that function very low. Most that I know are very cheerful and try their best.

act to the best of their capabilities. Some might have a job, have a relationship, they just carry on a daily life like any one does, but their brain only grew or only developed so much so they can only do so much. It depends on the severity of the mental retardation.

Most of the mentally HANDICAPPED people ive ever met have been the nicest people ive ever met. Since they mostly have the minds of children they usually arent mean people, unless its to each other, but thats how little kids are to each other. Ive never felt weird talking to them becuase they are all down to earth and not affected by politics or other trivial things that many normal people are concerned with.

I've met and talked to mentally retarded people, they're fine. They're just like us, but there's something wrong with their brain, thats all. Nothing to be afraid of. There's a guy in my art class, he's hilarious and he's always making jokes about cats and stuff, he's mentally retarded, but i treat him like i'd treat anyone else. like an equal.

It varies from person to person. Some d.c. (developmentally challenged) people are as nice as can be, while others can become violent without warning. It depends what their disability is. But never assume that they aren't intelligent--they may have some trouble processing or communicating what they know, but often they know far more than you think.

to preform in a different way as a normal person will. Because they don't know what they doing or what is going on around them.
