The most common occupation with a salary level above $250,000/year is a specialized doctor, such as a radiologist, cardiologist, surgeon, etc.
Lawyers are a dime a dozen today and the vast majority make under $100,000.
99.9% of government employees do not even make close to that. The highest paid government employee is the President, and his salary is $400,000/year.
Aside from doctors, the most common job that offers that type of income is sales. Sales are unique in the aspect that anyone can be successful at them, many sales positions do not even require a college degree. The amount of income is of course dictated by the product/service being sold.
Myself personally, I am 30 years old, in direct sales, my pay is strictly commission. I do have a college degree, however it would not be necessary for the type of work I do. My gross income exceeds $500K/year offset by a little over $200K in related expenses.

If there was a job like this, it would be VERY highly competetive; however, there is none such other than an entrepenuer. Some of the highest paying jobs though, occur in medical fields. Surgeons, Practitioners, and various hospital personal all have high pay. Their median is around 170,000, but that doesn't include the THOUSANDS of dollars for Med School and also the time it spent for their degrees. If a medical field is not for you, creating your own business is a great idea. Becoming an entrepenuer is basically a huge risk. Results can vary from a Yahoo! type company to the local pizza parlor. Some are multi-billionares, while others can just barely pay taxes. There is no easy way to find large amounts of money, but if you're trying to take the easy way to retirement and life; there're already people ahead of you.

Any profession Doctor, Lawyer, President, Exec VP, Business owner (if it's succesfull business)
Realize that you have to be in the top of your field like a surgeon or a criminal lawyer etc..
There's not that many people (considering the size of the population) that make $250K+
They are all at the senior level with a lot of education and experience

Well, if you want something that doesn't require a lot of time in school, you'd have to consider real estate in a hot market area (large growing city). You have to be one of the best to get this amount (it's competitive), but it's possible to do well if you're good.
It's possible in other sales fields too, but you have to be a good salesperson for sure.

Most people that earn that kind of money are business owners, or are in sales of some sort. Very few salary jobs will get you good oney early in your career. Some that do are doctors, lawyers, and actuarians.
