Well, first of all there's offense and defense. On offense, your batting, and defense, your feilding. There are nine positions availible when your out on the field. Theres..

Infield
Pitcher- pitches the ball to the batter, who's trying to hit it
Catcher- catches the ball that is thrown by the pitcher, and calls the kinds of pitches that are thrown
1st base- Catch balls that are thrown to them when the batter hits a ball
2nd base- When a runner is on 1st, and you want to get them out, you throw it to this person who stands on the base.
3rd base- When a runner is on second, and you want to get them out, you throw it to this person who stands on the base.
Shortstop- between 3rd and 2nd base who fields balls that the 3rd/2nd baseman can't get.

Outfield
Left field- Fields balls that go past 3rd/shortstop
Center field- Fields balls that go past 2nd and pitcher
Right field- Fields balls that go past the 1st baseman

Now that the positions are explained, I'll tell you about batting.
To bat, your team has to be in an order that never changes throughout the game. This is called the batting order. When it's your turn to bat, you step into the batters box and look towards the pitcher. If you do a combination of 3 swingingandmissing or not swinging and the pitch is perfect, then your out and you can't bat anymore until you go through the order again. When the umpire calls "ball", then that means that the pitch that the pitcher threw was out of the strikezone. The strike zone is an imaginary "window" that goes from about you knees to about your shoulders and is the width of the plate. If the pitch is in that stikezone, and you don't swing, then the umpire will call "strike." When three of your players strikout, or get out on base, then you switch onto defense and try to get three out their players out .

Well, those are the basics of playing softball, but it's only a fraction of what you really need to know to become a good player.
