Hi Brian,
There are not horse socks in the sense we think of socks, but they do make horse boots as an alternative to shoes. A sock is also a term to describe a white foot and leg. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horse_markings Shoes are generally worn to protect weak feet or to protect on rugged ground. Boots are put on before the ride and have many different styles and purposes. People would pick boots over shoes because of a possible cost difference and the health perks from allowing a horse to go 'barefoot' when not working. Try http://www.infohorse.com/html/horseboots.asp for a little idea of what boots are like. I also know Horse Illustrated (maybe Horse and Rider though, ? both) came out with a really good article on boots within a year. Hope that helps!

The markings on a horses legs can be referred to as socks when they extend from the coronet band (where the hoof joins the leg) up above the fetlock. Horses also wear boots, but they are wrapped around the leg, to provide protection from various injuries. There are many different types of protective boot including: splint, skid, sport support, brushing, overreach, knee, hock, traveling, sausage, tendon, and lots more! You can even purchase boots that go on the hoof, in place of metal shoes, to provide protection and increase grip.

Well not socks really but they do make a rubber pad that goes between the shoe and hoof for more proction.
Also make a easy boot for over the hoof instead of useing regular
shoes.
They also make leg wraps to protect the upper part of horse's leg.
There is differant things made for horse's legs and hoofs but not
socks like humans.

Yes there are socks in the sense you are thinking of!!!! You can buy boots which serve the same perpose as metal shoes, however these cannot be shaped in the same way as the metal, so socks (i think they are made of neoprene, some are moulded from a soft flexable rubber) these are fitted between hoof and boot. As well as providing a better fit they stop rocks and dirt slipping into the boot and rubbing

No, but the are leg warmers, and blankets. If the horse had socks the horse would have a hard time walking properly.

Yep. There are sock, stockings, anklets. My gelding has a sock on his left front leg and two stockings on his hind legs, and my mare has an anklet on her left hind leg.
It's the white hair that some horses have on their legs. They're born with it, and it's considered an identification mark, like blazes and stars of white on the face of a horse.

Yes. A sock is a white marking on the horses leg, they don't have to be even nor matching on each leg. There is different lengths and they have different names, such as sock, stocking, coronet band, anklet etc.. =]

yes, but probably not in the way you are thinking....
socks, as well as stockings, are two of the many white leg marking common on horses......
there are also a lot of products that protect the leg like shipping boots, and polo wraps.......
