These two catches were the nicest. Two of Edmonds' most spectacular defensive plays came while on the Cardinals and the Angels. In June 1997, while playing center field for the Anaheim Angels, Edmonds ran straight back towards center field wall and dove outstretched for a fly ball over his head, making the catch on the warning track. His other memorable catch came when on the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004 while covering center field against Red's batter Jason LaRue. LaRue hit a deep shot to center field that surely would have been enough to be a home run. However, Edmonds had other plans. On a dead run, he scaled the wall, reached his entire right arm over the fence, and caught the ball. Edmonds was shocked himself to find the ball sitting inside his glove, not to mention the fans, or even LaRue, who walked back to the dugout with his jaw nearly touching the ground.

I am a huge Mets fan and was at Game 7. At the time that Chavez made the catch, the excitement was like nothing I've ever been a part of as a sports fan. I wouldn't necessarily say it was the best catch ever, but it was by far the most clutch catch I've ever seen. It's a shame they didn't win the game, but there is no taking away from what a thrilling and clutch play it was.

Old school here......nothing will ever out do the Willie Mays catch over his shoulder in the World Series......the amazing part that a lot of people never notice is that Willie had a habit of "slapping: his glove when a ball was coming to him.....if you can ever get a "slow'mo" of this catch....check it out...he takes time to slap the glove with his left hand and then take off after it.....maybe the catch would have been easier if he had not done that and then this would never even been discussed......GO YANKEES! STINKIN RED SOX!

Oh yeah, definitely Edmonds versus the Royals in K.C. a few years back. That was an amazing catch! The Willie Mays catch off a blast by Vic Wertz in the 1954 WS was great too.

All of the catches mentioned in the other answers were very impressive. The one that comes to mind is when Derek Jeter dove into the stands for a foul ball. Another is a fly ball caught bare-handed by Kevin Mitchell in the left field foul territory.

In 1989 Kevin Mitchel, while playing left feild for SF was running down down a ball hit toward the foul line into the corner the ball started hooking faster toward the fould line than he could get his grove to . so the only play he had was to try and barehand and he caught it...the best I ever saw. The most dramatic was the Willie Mays one off Vic Wertz in the 54 series into that 480 foot deep centerfeild of the old Polo

For in game implications, it was the most phelomenal catch of the year. If they win, it becomes legendary, but, oh well...
The best catch overall was Matthews Jr... my God! That is one of the greatest of all time.
