Typed manuscript of Goodnow's account of how he helped the first slave escape to Canada from Wisconsin Territory in 1842. The slave was sixteen-year-old Caroline Quarlls, who originally came from St. Louis, and her escape was the first recorded use of what became known as the underground railroad.

Since the institution of slavery is as old as human history there is no way to know who was the the first successful escapee. If anyone were to examine ones ancestry far enough back he(she) would likely find they are the descendants of slaves.
