The transmission modulator determines when the transmission should shift. The modulator matches shift points to the engine load by the practical application of engine vacuum. It controls and regulates pressure for smooth operation in automatic transmission. In the absence of the modulator valve (such as a chrysler torque-flite), the transmission will shift from internal pressure.

It controls shift points on non electronic transmissions. It works off of transmission hydraulic pressure, centrifugal force, spring pressure and engine manifold vacuum.

It can be electric or vacuum it helps to determin when the trans shifts. Not very good if its bad. The old vacuum would allow the trans to shift but very hard the newer ones depends on why its bad.... Hope this helps

on older cars it transfers vacuum from the engine to the tranny to provide shifting through gears
