I have a few male students who have crushes on me and they sometimes openly harass me. I document all these issues and I tell them it's not appropriate and to stop. Some of them have backed off and some just won't stop. I'm a first year teacher, so I'm wondering what the proper avenue is. Should I take these students to my administrators, i.e., principal, assistant principal, etc.? Should I call their parents? What should I do?

I do shut them down. I tell them they can't speak to teachers that way. I tell them to stop. I tell them I would never EVER date a student. They just keep coming back. What's the next step?

Yes, you need to talk to an assistant principal about it. They probably need written up. Also, you should call the parents and tell them exactly what the child is saying and doing. It's best if you call the parents first, the AP will ask if you have (more than likely).

I think you should talk to them and ask them why they have a crush on you. Then ask them why they can't find that in a girl their age. If they refuse to listen threaten them with going to the administrators. Wait a few days and if they back off then pretend like nothing happened. I know it's hard but its something you got to do. If they continue go tell administrators and schedule a conference with the parents. That's what I would do if I was in that situation.

It seems you have turned it into a game for them. First they did have a crush, but now that they know it buggs you and that you are getting angry about it they will keep pushing because they think it's funny. I personally would have started by telling them that it's flattering, but we have work to do. What kind of harassing have they been doing? Is it physical? What do they say to you?

Shut them down or your rep will be shot. Do what it takes.
