Judging from your previous question, you are thinking about Ballroom?
In Ballroom, you don't compete in individual dances, you compete 5 dances at a time (or 4, in case of American Smooth style). It is only when you are a beginner you can compete in individual dances. So your choices are:
International Standard (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz)
International Latin (Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble, Rumba, Jive)
American Smooth (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz)
American Rhythm (Cha Cha, Rumba, Mambo, East Coast Swing, Bolero)
International is much more competitive, meaning there is a lot more people compete in it therefore it is harder to get to the very top. But this also means there are better opportunities for training in this style. However, if you learn International and later you decide to switch to American you can do so very easily. A lot of people who did well in International but nothing outstanding in terms of national rankings switched to American and got to the very top. American is taught socially, so it is an easier start. You can start with any style, whichever you can find in you area, see if you like Ballroom as much as you think you would. Then you can get into serious training. At that point, you will know where you want to take it.
I recommend doing both Standard and Latin and pick later (Or Rhythm and Smooth, for that matter). See what appeals to you more and then decide.

Whatever your interests are make a difference in your choice. If you are upbeat and love speed, I would try something fast like hip-hop. If you are calm, graceful, and the idea of going to a ball and getting dressed up suites you, try Waltzing. If you want a lively challenge do Salsa dancing. Whenever you watch Dancing With The Stars or So You Think You Can Dance, which competitions are your favorite? Follow your heart and dance to something you enjoy. Try to figure out the dance for you based on the music speed, what you are like, and what costumes you would be willing to wear. Do you get what I'm saying?

It all depends on what form of dance that you enjoy.
I've been belly dancing for almost three years I really enjoy doing it and have a lot of fun.
and now during the summer I'm going to be working at a dance studio helping little kids.

i belly dance as well! it's such an empowering woman's dance, although men do it too! it's an art, to watch your body move in some of the most beautiful ways! and there ARE competitions.... more specifically in russia and the middle east, but it's popularity in america is really starting to bring notice to the competitive parts of belly dance.
another is african dancing, especially from Ghana. a lot of Ghana dances are now being mixd with hip hop dancing, but i say go back to the roots of it. a lot of it reminds me of belly dance, but it requires your whole body all the time. belly dancing, although can be graceful by adding different moves at once, begins as a very isolatory dance. ghana dances are all about moving every part of your body. there really aren't competitions or anything with this... but you could take it to the hip hop level and perform in that respect.
another dance similar to the ghana dances would be punta soca from central america. you move just as much as you do in the african dances. it's harder to find punta dancers to learn from, though. i don't even think self-help dvd's exist. haha! but it's amazing!!

Ukrainian Dancing! I have been dancing for 9 years now. It's upbeat and really exciting. You get to know the people in your group really well and they become your second family. You can also join most groups at any age.

It all depends on what you want to do, and what you like. You can try breakdancing, popping n locking, tricking(its not really a dance but). Or you can do the foxtrot waltz etc etc.
