I was wondering what those experienced with premature labor. Does your mucus plug fall out like a week before? Or was it sudden? I'm really worried that it might happen to me, because it has happened to quite a few people I know. Let me know your experiences.
Thanks

I lost my mucus plug at about 26 weeks, but I didn't know it at the time. I was a first time mum, and knew nothing about pregnancy. I thought I had an infection and since I was due to have a check-up the following week I thought I'd mention it to the doctor then. It was hard to get a doctors appointment where I lived. I went into labour on the Wednesday and still didn't realize it...it was only minor cramps and back pain. Then on the Thursday night I laid awake all night because my back was so sore. I got up early Friday morning and went to the toilet and bled very heavily. I then went to the hospital, and found out I was ready to give birth. They put me on a drip to try and hold off the labour, and gave me steroid injections for the babies lungs. Come Monday, nothing was going to hold him back and my son was born 13 weeks premature. He is now a healthy 6 year old

Okay, let's try to clear up the confusion. As has been mentioned, every labor is different. Things you can be aware of:
with the onset of labor you may or may not lose your mucous plug. Sometimes it precedes labor by hours, days or a week. It can be intact like a long round cyliner resembling contact cement, or be slimy - blood tinged or bloody.
Water may or may not break, or leak, before or during labor. My son was born with the bag intact, the other two the dr broke the bag during crowning.
Contractions may be light at first or just feel like gas, and they usually progress to sound, painful, tight, and very regular - and they last for 1 1/2 -2 minutes as labor progresses.
As far as premature labor goes you can watch for these things:
Bladder Infections (painful urination with frequency)
Don't get dehydrated as this could potentially bring on contractions...the hormone Oxytocin is in the same part of the Pituitary Gland as the Anti Diuretic Homone. The first triggers contractions, the second is released to prevent losing too much water -causing urinary retention which is what the body does when we get dehydrated. I delivered premie twins (26 weeks) on a mommy who had gotten dehydrated the day before, she got up "just not feeling well" and delivered the first one in the toilet, not even knowing she was in labor. Ironically, he is the one that survived (he was 1 lb 5 oz's), his brother did not survive, lungs too underdeveloped, he was 1 lb 3 ounces.
You should be just fine, but if your instincts tell you something isn't right then talk with your Dr. and make sure he/she fully understands your concerns!! Try to focus on the positive things and not get too worried about all the "what ifs". I know that is hard at times, but think positive, stay hydrated, eat good foods, take your prenatal vitamins, get light excersize, put your feet up and relax every hour or so (with a glass of water!) You will get through it. God Bless!

My son was born a month early without any warning signs. One day I felt a very sharp pain in my lower back. I thought I did something to pull a muscle. The pain came and went. I was talking on the phone with my mom-in-law and told her about what was going on. She suggested that I timed the intervals between the cramps. Well, at first they were 20 min. apart then 15 min.... so on. So, I called the hospital. The person who answered the phone (this is the emergency line) listened to my story and asked me if I'm having an emergency. :) Well, I got a little frustrated..... it was my first pregnancy and I was freaking out! When I finally got through to a doctor she said she does not think it's time yet, but I should go to the ER just to make sure. Anyway, to make a long story short I gave birth 19 hours later.
Although my son was born a month early he is a strong and healthy baby. He is bigger than my friend's son who gave birth a week before me on her due date. :)

All that said... every pregnancy and delivery is different.

I don't know about the faith of my mucus plug... I wouldn't worry about a thing. You'll be fine.
