Originally the Mohicans lived along the banks of the Hudson River, in modern-day New York state. Mohican people also lived in parts of Massachusetts, Vermont, and Connecticut. The Wappingers and Housatonics were originally part of the Mohican Nation, though each had their own sachems (chiefs). After Europeans arrived, disease and warfare killed many Mohican people, and the survivors were driven west. They eventually settled in Wisconsin, where the Stockbridge Mohicans still live today. There are also small Mohican communities remaining in New York and Massachusetts

They still exist in Wisconsin between the Hudson and Conneticut river valleys.

They never were. Cooper made them up from a tribe named the Mahicans. Still one of my favorite books of childhood. I greww up 50 miles south of Lake George and Fort William Henry.
