SEARCH FOR THE SUN by Ellen Anthony. It was an Eppie Award winner for Best Mystery and a Reader's Choice Finalist.
Set on a science fiction world, it's the story of a young man solving an extremely important murder. He finds everyone--his captain, his father, and even his queen--want him to stay out of the investigation, but knows he must solve it. When his partner is murdered, he sets out to do it and is nearly killed himself.
This mystery is unique because the murderer is caught and kills himself a hundred pages before the end of the book and you STILL don't know all he did. You get to go through the murder scene several times to pick up clues and learn which of the old clues aren't clues at all. A really good puzzle.

Alex Kava writes great mystery novels. She has a series of books about an FBI profiler named Maggie O'Dell. The first book in the series is called A Perfect Evil, then Split Second, The Soul Catcher, At the Stroke of Madness, and the latest is A Necessary Evil. All are really great books.

I don't know if you enjoy some of the series out there now, but I've had and sold a number of Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye.
The Aunt Dimity series is popular, too, as well as Agatha Raisin by M C Beaton.
Pepper Martin mystery series is just getting started. She hit her head on a tombstone and can not talk to the dead - she has to solve their problems. The first book was Don of the Dead.
The links below take you to the Amazon page with a number of the listings on them. Hope some of that gives you ideas.

Rebecca is excellent! The author is Daphne DuMaurier, though. DeWinter is the last name of the character.
I like:
Nevada Barr -- murders in National Parks
Janet Evanovitch -- funny
James Patterson -- the king of thrillers- all fast paced and exciting
Laurie King's Mary Russell books
Agatha Christie, of course
Karen Kijewski - I used to live in Sacramento, and her detective lives there.
I also like Patricia Cornwell, very CSI like, but smarter, and Fiona Buckley's Ursula Blanchard mysteries - a lady in waiting at Queen Elizabeth I's court solves mysteries. Mystery, historical fiction and romance -- who could ask for more!

The Shakespeare mysteries by Charlaine Harris are really good--they're set in the south, and the main character is very compelling. Definitely a good read!

Are You Afraid of the Dark? by Sidney Sheldon. It's really good. I've listended to it on audio book. I'm not sure how it reads, though.
