You're right. Go be a potted plant out in the garden. Don't expect my tax dollars to support you, though.

Before compulsory attendance at school, standards of literacy and numeracy were extremely poor. Poor people could not afford to educate their children. As a result, poor people on the whole remained poor.
To begin with, attendance was voluntary, until the governments realised that most poor families sent their children to work from a young age in order to help pay for food and housing; they went to work rather than going to the free schools.
Laws were passed and rigourously enforced to ensure children attended school.
Industrialists were also keen to educate their workforce, so that they could employ supervisors and middle managers from the general populace, as well as mechanical engineers.
So to answer your question, we have to go to school because;
it is the law;
it is a free way to educate yourself and better your earning potential;
it benefits the country by helping to provide an educated workforce for industry;
It benefits the community by providing artists, musicians and civil servants.
:D enjoy school!

We dont!
The (UK)law states that you must be educated in school or otherwise.
The problem there is that often both parents work and there is noone at home to teach you.
My own children were homeschooled by me after the infants school and have just returned to college to do their A levels.

Because although most people would like to sit at home and watch tv well many people still work to let you do that. However, the Government seems to think it's ok that a quarter of your life is education!

You have to go to school to learn. It's also helpful for the teachers, cos otherwise they'd be on the dole if they didn't have anyone to teach!
