Several things to consider here
The tank Size: How big is the area and how many fish do you have it in it?
How big are the fish?
What are you feeding them? Flakes (like goldfish flakes) can have a harsher effect on water quality then pellets.
Usually you can feed a fish as many times a day as you want as long as they can finish the food you give them in no more than 3 minutes. Just make sure there isn't a bunch of left over food when you feed them. I would say about 2-3 times a day just a bit is the correct amount. Although, if you're not interested in that kind of time, you can feed them just once a day.
If you are on one feeding schedule and then realize it's not working then just change it. Feed them more, feed them less, or feed them a different amount of food, and see how that improves their weight gain and the water. You can also get one of those Vacation Feeders if you are unable to feed them enough.
Don't overfeed them or you will develop several issues from clouded water, water tempature change, increase in bacteria growth, fin rot, filter clog, to a list of other issues.

Generally you're supposed to feed them two to three times daily...a small amount each time. This gives their bodies time to digest the food so their stomachs don't explode. Yes that does happen and i have seen it. Unfortunately my roommate overfed one of my goldfish and it was...all over the tank. If you're super busy, they can get fed once a day generally. Mine do if i work really long shifts.
