How does our society and the media perceive the "self"?

Is it physical or something else?

I think it's how well the 'self' conforms to images in advertisements and popular television personalities. Mostly physical - also has to do with using accepted phrases and having the accepted opinions and attitudes. This seems inhuman to me - it's better than each 'self' be like no other.
