How about Dwight Eisenhower or the very colorful General Patton or the English general Montgomery. You could do a paper on the leaders of the Allies in WWII. Patton and Montgomery were very temperamental. Fascinating. Also, Eisenhower started out as a most unlikely person to be Commander in Chief.

How about Winston Churchill - the only English leader to warn about "appeasement" and opposed to giving in to Hitler and the leader of the British during the war - his inspiring speechs made him a Nazi target, for example "...we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, ...".

How about the London blitz? Did you know the King and Queen refused to leave London and stayed during the blitz?

You can also write about the D-Day invasion - the biggest invasion ever launched. The logistics of assembling all the men and material plus the deceptions they had to do to keep the Nazis guessing where they were going to land plus the uncertainty of the weather over the British channel - well there have been movies and TV shows about it.

Another topic I always found interesting is the War in Russia - how the Germans invaded and were winning until the Russian winter started -- The seige of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and the Battle of Stalingrad where the Russians were determined to fight off the Germans to the last man and how against all odds, the Russians triumphed.

The Man Who Never Was. To divert German troops away from Normandy, the British planted false plans on the body of a drowned man who was dressed as an officer. The body was left where the Germans would find it and they did and swallowed the bait.

Some of the things included in the man's pockets were a photograph of his sweetheart, two ticket stubs from a popular play, and other very ordinary items. It was a major intelligence operation and one of the keys required was finding a body of a man who had drowned. The body was donated by the family of the deceased and they weren't told until the Normandy invasion was done with why.

The terms of the Treaty of Versailles imposed upon Germany at the end World War I sowed the seeds of World War 2 by stripping Germany of territory and requiring her to pay huge reparations to the victorious powers. The demands in Germany for vengeance were given added stimulus when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party came to power in January 1933. By early 1939 Germany had thrown off the shackles of the Versailles treaty, remilitarised the Rhineland introduced conscription, annexed Austria and occupied Czechoslovakia. The seeds of war were almost ripe!
