Audiobooks can take a long time to play, and sometimes (because people buying the book on tape might not be interested in every last detail of the novel) they are shortened. Unnecessary passages or things that only sound good if you read them are taken out for a smoother listening experience.

the difference is abridged version gives you the highlights, or shorter version of the story. the unabridged gives you the whole story.
