There are so many ways that volunteering can help you. I volunteer through my volunteer center. In some of my projects, I provide an orientation to my volunteer group. In others, I am tutoring children or interacting with visitors at one of the local museums. In others, I am working an assembly line packaging food at our local food bank. All of these activities require good verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Every time you do any of these activities, you get better prepared for the next time.
You can find all sorts of projects through your local volunteer center:

Volunteer centers provide one-time, short-term, or long-term volunteer projects that match your interests and meet real community needs.
I'm a firm believer in volunteering within your local community. You can make a difference!

You enhance your verbal skills by talking with all the new people you meet. You might also communicate in other forms (ie, writing, body language).
