Are you looking for something to handle? A bearded dragon would be a good choice and these are good for someone with little experience keeping reptiles. Most aren't that colorful, but there are some morphs that have a yellow, orange, or reddish coloration.

If this isn't something you're going to handle a lot, a blue tongued skink (especially the northerns) can be colorful (rust/black/white with a blue tongue). These can be biters, though.

I'd recommend against keeping an iguana or water dragon - these can be good pets, but both come with a bit of special care. The iguana gets to be 6 feet and can be very tempermental as an adult. The water dragons are wonderful, but need large mesh cages and high humidity, and are prone to respiratory and eye infections. These would be good after you get a little more experience with reptiles.

Another possible lizard is a uromastyx. These are great, don't mind being handled, but need a lot of heat - we're talking 120o basking temperature, here.

I'd recommend doing some reading on these and other suggestons you'll get. See what they need (food, lighting, heat, cage/tank size, egg laying area for females, etc.). Them pick something that fits what you can provide and what you want. Here are some good websites to start:

Good luck!

I would try a bearded dragon or a water dragon. The beardie will get to be about 2 ft, while the water dragon will get slightly larger, about 3 ft. The water dragon will require more room, but are very tame and pretty. The beardie can live in a 65gal long tank and is also tame, but less colorful. Both are active during the day, both eat insects and some veggies, and they both NEED UV lighting. There is no option in reptile care: If you dont get UV, your reptile will die a long and horrid death. They need UV to digest food. It is required.

Depending on the space available, I would say the water dragon is the best choice as they are colorful, larger, and very friendly. Make sure you google care or read a good book on their care before you get one.

I don't suggest an Iguana becuase they get very large and require VERY LARGE cages, also the have very strict dirtary needs(that tend to cost a lot). I would go with a Bearded Dragon they make great pets and aren't that hard to care for if you've done your research. And you said you would like something colorful, if you look online for Bearded Dragons you will find all different colors from grey to bright red. Good luck make sure you do your research before you get a reptile.
