Astrology has been described as the science of astronomy applied to human affairs. As already indicated, astrology was very likely the first science, certainly the first to be developed with detailed observations and mathematical calculations. However, in recent centuries its reputation with the scientists can be compared to what is called the oldest profession, prostitution.
Astrology is what is known as an occult science, meaning a science that is hidden or relies on hidden or invisible causes and effects. I believe that the origin of astrology is based on empirical evidence from observation. As an occult science astrology is holistic and based more on spiritual and psychological relations than on the physical mechanics, although it is anchored on the physical positions of the celestial bodies.
I consider astrology to be the science of time patterns. Modern science uses time as a major component in its observations and experiments. However, it only measures time in terms of its single dimension quantitatively. Astrology studies the qualities of time under the assumption that the quality of time varies according to day and night, the seasons of the year, and the more detailed refinements of these based on the exact positions of the sun, moon, and the planets in relation to the earth and the fixed stars.
This idea of a cosmic clock is based on the ancient world view that the universe is meaningful and that therefore we can learn about and understand the meaning of different moments in time and that the interpretations of these meanings can be verified by observation of human experience.
In spite of the development of social sciences such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, and so on, there still seems to be unbridgeable gap in modern science between the hard sciences of physics and chemistry and even the life sciences, let alone the social sciences. Most scientists have failed to acknowledge what philosophers like myself have attempted to integrate in explaining how the spiritual factors of individual freedom affect the predictability of cause and effect according to how much consciousness is available to the organism.
The idea that a holistic science could describe general patterns of time that shape human experience as their cosmic environment causes most modern scientists to throw up their hands in exasperation. Yet I argue that astrology time patterns do affect, though do not absolutely determine, our behavior in a comparable way that our genetic pattern and environmental upbringing also affect us without taking away our free will.

First of all astrology uses science but is NOT A SCIENCE. Look in the science section of a library or book store and you will not find astrology books there. You will find astronomy a legit science that came from astrology but that's where it ends. If you claim astrology is a science you must be able to apply "The Scientific Method"
The Scientific Method is the best way yet discovered for winnowing the truth from lies and delusion. The simple version looks something like this:
1. Observe some aspect of the universe.
2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed.
3. Use the hypothesis to make predictions.
4. Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there are no discrepancies between theory and experiment and/or observation.
When consistency is obtained the hypothesis becomes a theory and provides a coherent set of propositions which explain a class of phenomena. A theory is then a framework within which observations are explained and predictions are made.
Claims that can not be tested are invalid. Consistency is crucial for science while in astrology there is none. Independent testing has shown that astology fails. (see link 1)
Another point is astrology is bigoted. Making judgements due to birthdate without evidence to back it up; is just as bad as doing the same based on race, sex, religion, etc.
Most of the questions here are on compatibilty and it seems the best way to find a mate is by birthdate, time, and location.
(see link 2)
How did the ancient astrologers do it? This world did not have accurate clocks, no time zones, no concept of latitude/longitude and believed the world was flat not round. Astrology was done mainly for the rich and the powerful not the masses. The caster better say the right things or he could lose job and his life.
The common folk had no need, let alone money to spend on fortune tellers. They had to struggle to live each day. Few birth records were kept and many did not know when or where they were born. And now for astrologers we better keep a GPS system for the birth of our children.
Of course there are more than one type of astrology and they main thing is belief not science. You must "believe" in astrology for it to work. If there is science in astrology must be subjected to testing and if it fails, discarded.
Astrology does not come naturally, someone has to tell you about it. Most people don't ask how and why (or which type); they go straight to accepting as fact. Ask for evidence that can be tested and you're told that one needs an "open mind".
A problem for astrologiers is they can't be open minded that they can be wrong.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

Not really. Because they are not predictions. They are simple means for those who cannot consult an Astrologer to get a 'feel' of the day/week/month. You should not stop yourself at reading the Horoscope but consult a good astrologer or online service like http://www.astrolife.com

Astrology does not predict the occurence of a event. It only predicts opportune time to do a particular task with a high probability of success. It predicts the favourable days for carrying out auspicious task and unfavourable days to do any task and expect meaningful results.

Astrology is based on vague probabilities. If you make a vague prediction... people can find something in it that might fit their own lives. It's the same principal jerks like John Edward use in tricking people into thinking he's psychic.
