You've got to be kidding.
Here goes, Col. Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick) was colonel of the 54th Massachusetts, one of the first all black regiments in the Union. Shaw is very young (24, I think) and he cares deeply for his men, and struggles along the way.
Other military leaders don't take the 54th seriously, and don't expect them to go into combat, much less perform well. The 54th spends a lot doing manual labor, while Col. Shaw advocates with higher ups that his men can do well in battle.
The 54th finally gets there chance in battle and does well.
Col. Shaw volunteers his men to lead a historic charge against Fort Sumter. He leads his men on a suicidal charge, in daylight, across open ground (the beach) and they are nearly annihilated. Finally, night falls, and they breach the fort, only to be driven back. They never take the fort, and nearly the whole 54th dies, including their beloved and brave colonel, Shaw.
The End.
P.S. The meat of the movie shows how Shaw and his men bond and grow together, and their different struggles.
Good Luck

I will try to brief...This is a very good movie and if you have the chance to rent/buy it do so. It stars Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington (he won an Oscar for best supporting actor for this film), Carey Elews (spelled that very wrong) and Morgan Freeman.
It is about the first black regimine permitted to fight in the Civil War. Matthew's character is the squadern leader over a group of former slaves. He takes his job seriously and teaches them proper fighting techniques. When they are denied equal pay (blacks back then were not considered a whole person and therefore not entitled to the same benefits or pay as white soldiers), he refused to accept his pay along with the black soldiers. He also makes sure they get the proper fighting gear. They go into one battle that everyone thinks they will lose because they are black and not skilled...but they win!! Matthew is offered a command over a white regimine but he declines and stays. He then lobbys for them to take on the dangerous mission of being the first group of fighters in a mission to overtake a fort in North Carolina. Long story short....they all die in the attempt but fought bravely.
I'm leaving out a lot of the personal stories that dealt with some of the individual former slaves. Denzel's character makes a transformation of being a reluctant soldier to a willing participant (for lack of a better word). Matthew's friend and former butler (also a black dude) goes from being soft to a dedicated soldier. It also show how the stress Matthew was under as well has his relationship with his childhood friend (played by Carey E).
I really didn't do the movie justice. You need to see it to appreciate it. It truly is a wonderful film. I've seen it several times. Hope this helps.

It's almost entirely fictionalized but fairly accurate. The 54th Massachussetts Regiment was formed of Black men (mostly freed slaves from the south, but included some free Black from the north...not shown in the movie was two sons of Frederick Douglass joined). The Reg't was led by white officers, commanded by 24-year-old Col. Robert Gould Shaw, from a prominent Boston abolitionist family. Shaw had trouble getting his soldiers recognized as combat troops and paid equally with white soldiers, but the movie shows they didn't get uniforms and guns until later and that's not true. Eventually they had part in some battles and then Shaw volunteered to have his Reg't lead a Union assault on a Confederate fort. During the attack Shaw and many of the soldiers were killed.

I like #4 AND # 5's Answer but would like to note that you have to remember the times Blacks and Whites DID NOT work together, live together,or fight together ,especially in the South(Any white Union Officer found to be in command of Black troops while fighting the south, and captured, was Summarilly Executed,no Questions asked)
To summarise, this movie Showed us that Blacks were willing to fight for there freedom, just as whites were dieing to preserve the Union, and the Hardships both the enlisted blacks, and White officers faced, both racial, and political,to become an effective unit of the Union Army.
As a side note..the Fort was not Fort Sumter. It was Ft. Wagner and was never Surrendered by the Confederate Army until after the End of the War.
