If you mean a "clinical" type term I believe it is a "Comfort Item"

I've also heard the term "Transition Objects" applied, but this term can also be used for people of any age, such as an inherited jewelry item or something similar that a teenager or adult has a hard time being without. I'm pretty sure it applies to young children's comfort items as well.

No, I don't think so. That phrase has been used to explain many things that provides comfort for people. If you were to ask 100 different people to explain their security blanket, you would get tons of different answers. Maybe a crutch, but it doesn't sound as good as security blanket.
