In Greek mythology, Pandora ("all gifted") was the first woman. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to make her as part of the punishment of mankind for Prometheus' theft of the secret of fire. According to the myth, Pandora opened a container releasing all the miseries of mankind—greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining—leaving only hope inside.

When Pandora opened the her box, she let out all the evils, diseases, death and everything else ominous that fill our world today. If she hadn't caught the last one, there would have been NO hope for humankind.

All the miseries of mankind: greed, vanity, slander, envy, pining, and hope. When she opened the box, these started to escape, so she snapped it shut trapping only hope inside.
Personally, I am wondering if it was just a makeup kit, because it causes all those things too. :)
Also, sounds like Eve eatting the forbidden fruit of the knowledge of good and evil releasing sin upon all her children and all they had left to look forward to was hope in God.

Based from the book i read when i was in college, this box contains all evil that can create CHAOS to human beings. It is said to be owned by gods and only these gods have the power to send this box to mortals.
