After WWII Germany was rebuilt as a completely new nation. In 1948 we got our new constitution. So, the complete political system was new. The economic system changed completely, as well as the currency.
As almost every bigger town was completely destroyed by the allied bombings, they all had to be rebuilt. This had been an enormous effort, especially for the german women, for the men were dead or imprisoned at that time.
In the democratic system, which ended in 1933 (with the rising of Hitler), we had had a powefull community of poets, painters, thinkers, composers, philosophers. A lot of them emigrated or had been killed ba the nazis. There were just a few left.
Unfortunately we had lost a lot of our roots which had grown before the 12 years of the nazi. Germany had been a nation of poets and thinkers. With the rising of the nazis in 1933 and the 100 % of destruction in 1945, these roots had been cut off. You surely know what it means to a people to cut their roots off, as this is what happened to the indian nation in your country.
But Germany became a very peaceful and peace-loving nation of hard-working people in pursuit of happiness.
And to greencreeper: We do not hate the US Americans at all, we hate imperialistic aggression without any reson by governments and statesmen who have the Dollarsign in their eyes.

Mostly in a good way, freedom and democracy, tolerance and acceptance are normal in Germany. Well there are still some idiots that kill Turks or are xenophobic.
But they are a minority, they are just desperate and non-intelligent.
But Germany has also lost the Eastern Regions like East Prussia, Silesia and Pommerania. Nearly all the German population was banished and some also killed by Polands and/or Russians.
But this treatment's reason is Hitler and so on.
Today, Germany is NOT Naziland or anything like this, and they don't hate every foreigner, that comes to their country. I for example have got, besides German friends, also Turkish, Italian, French, Irani, Polish and Russian friends. Germany is some kind of multicultural and we are proud of it. I'm half German and half-Finn, and I don't have any problems with people that would offend me or hate me because of the fact that I'm half-foreigner.
I hate people that still have this stereotypical prejudice against Germany ...
So how has Germany changed since World War II?
It's become a democracy, the people don't hate Jews anymore, noone is persecuted because of race, religion or descendence, it's a quite rich country (yes it is, in the end) and it's no more so militaristic as it was under Hitler, fortunately.
But yet Hitler and the Nazis managed to destroy what Germans have risen up in the centuries before. Before Hitler, Germany was the country of the poets and the thinkers, and those stupid Nazi bastards destroyed this nearly totally.
But today Germany is on a good way...
I hope I could help you and was able to abolish some evil prejudice against Germany.
PS.: Hitler was a fully idiot, he's the reason why we Germans have to be ashamed (and we are) because of Holocaust, WW II and murder of a hundred of million people.

Letzter_wolpertinger and maholl and also others gave some good answers already.
One more thing to add: I'm living in the middle west of this country. The US Army and Air Force were here and in the south ever since the end of WW2 and there was a lot of influence, here.
You will find quite some things just like home, not just Mac Donalds and KFC, but many words like "shop" or "2nd hand" etc.
It is even hard for me to find examples, as I am so used to it. I only realized it, when the wall went down an I had a visitor from the east. She was not used to the American terms and kept asking "what means....", before I had no idea, how many American words we are using.
Also, the American music of all kinds is very popular here as well as movies. This is also influencing the viewers/listeners.
Another thing: since a short time they are celebrating Halloween and for some longer time Valentine's day - both were not known here, before.

It is called Home Work. That is where you maybe search for information on your own instead of letting some one else do the work for you.
But, I will give you some help. Much of what has happened or changed in Germany mirrors the US except that it happened to 10 to 20 years later. Except of course for things like Elvis which happened at about the same time.
Good Luck with your Social Studies.....

One way is that if you look at a map, there are big like "indents" into the country because after WWII all of the bordering countries took some land from Germany. When you look at the map look how the shape of the country has big pieces of the country going in like. It's hard to explain but trust me, that did happen. Jsut study the globe and look at Germany and the bordering countries. If you still don't get it send me a message!
