Family with three boys 10, 7 and 5 is looking to get away for a week in April. Would those in the know recommend Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks? We'd rent a house on the beach one place or the other.

For the kids sake Va. Beach. It has fun things to do. An amusement park, shops to hang out in, and things like laser tag, go carts, video games and lots of food. For your sake, Outer Banks is quiet ,beautiful, and restfull. Until my kids were grown we always chose for the kids. They were the most important since we knew they would be gone and out of the home before we knew it. And now they are...we vacation for us now and we don't regret it. Our kids still want to be around us because we built a relationship with them when they were young. They knew we gave up lots for them and know they respect us for it!

for both you and your kids DEFINITALLY the Outerbanks. better place in general. I live close to both of them and have been to both of them and the OB are like a million times better. Virginia beach is way overcrowded and overrated. The OB is not too crowded and way more fun. There are tons of things to do there and the beach is so much more queiter, safer, and way cleaner. PS the waves are great on one side but less on the other side. I personally like the more wavy side more (prettier, better views, better waves, more fun) but if you think that waves are too dangerous for your kids, go to the other side.

Good luck

PS another place that might be good for you is Bethany Beach.

Outerbanks are warmer both air and water. Plus, there are more house renting options in the OB. However, the OB has bridge limitations that will slow the drive into and out of the beach areas.
