My class recently read a story in which an individual was putting snuff up his nose. "He shouted for two of his comrades and ordered them to hold onto him tightly while he reached into his boot to retrieve his snuffbox and refill his nose, which had been frostbitten six times." Could someone explain this to me please?
If it helps, this story was set in Russia.

oh is this the story where they eventually go to finland to escape being orphans or something? anyways its pulverized tobacco, to stop the snot from freezing and it also gives him a niccotine dose too :) no seriously this is what it is ;p

Snuff is powdered tobacco. Dry snuff is placed in the nostril and sniffed hard. Wet snuff can be taken by the nose or the mouth. Traditionally, dry snuff was the most common and kept in snuff boxes. The term can be used for anything taken through the nose so you could snuff speed or cocaine if you wanted to use the term.

OK, little history lesson here. Russia is full of raging alcoholics. The biggest offender is Vladimir Putin. When communism fell he was the head of their secret police(the KGB). He was so devastated, he quit drinking and started smoking crack.
He eventually forced a drunken bear(Boris Yeltsin) out of his job as President of Russia. When Vladimir Putin took over as the head of a democratically elected government(while the old Soviet Union was in disarray-ie. all the ex Soviet republics broke away from the Commonwealth of Independent States to form their own free sovereign countries) the price of vodka soared through the roof. With the fall of the Soviet Union and the fall of communism, he was so upset that he poisoned the leader of the Ukraine(he made his face look horrid with chemicals). He was so induced with paranoid schizophrenia(no doubt from the crack addiction) that he put people in jail that were a threat to his leadership(ie. successful businessmen, academics, etc.)
With his desire to bring back the good old days of totalitarianism and one man rule it drove their economy spiraling outta control. With high vodka prices and the cost of crack skyrocketing on the black market he was reduced to sniffing snuff(which is powdered tobacco). This explains why he and his country are such a mess today!!!! Bottom line- SAY NO TO DRUGS!!!

my goodness... i would think it was a typo. i've never heard of snuff up the nose... doesn't sound possible. i thought the snuff needed to be moistened by saliva.

Perhaps it got his nose to running, which warmed it up from the inside out.
