Well, the first was Clovis. He built up a powerful military among his franks and he conquered Gaul.
Years later came charles martel, who defended the area from the Muslims in Spain at the Battle of Tours.
Then came Pippin the Short, who got his crown from the Pope for helping him fight off the lombards.
Then Charlemagne, who helped the next Pope fight off a revolt from the patricians.
So they had a strong military, they ran a centralized system, and they used the Church to give them legitimacy.
Charlemagne also married women to give him alliances with nearby tribes. He was married about five times, each one a princess of a different tribe. (never more than one at atime)
Oh yeah, without the Church they weren't willing to claim the crown. Both Pippin and charlemagne were effectively the ruler of their people or area before they became the titular head. And when Charlemagne became King of the Lombards, he was even given the Iron Crown, which is said to contain a nail from the True Cross. Again, appealing to the Church to give them legitimacy.

Did no one teach you how to do research for yourself? Go to your local library and crack open an encyclopedia. Research Charlemagne, and then a few of the rulers who preceeded and followed him. Going to a search engine such as Dogpile or Google can also be helpful. Be wary of Wikipedia; since users can go in and adjust the entries, they are subject to being filled with misconceptions and outright misinformation.
I'll give you one detail regarding Charelemagne: he gathered around him knowledgeable men such as Alcuin of York, and set up schools to pass along knowledge. Have fun discovering more for yourself!!
