As a gay man I will tell you this. Gay men are more vulnerable to low self esteem than straight men, because all people are equal and self esteem is generally determined by how you perceive yourself based on how people treat you. Heterosexual men go through a great amount of mental abuse from early childhood on, being constantly forced to strive to be the perfect man. However, gay men are MORE LIKELY to have self esteem problems - NOT because they are gay but for how they are treated by friends, family, church and society for being gay. It is difficult to respect yourself when no one else does. Which is why homosexual children have the highest suicide rates. When everyone makes an innocent person feel worthless, they will believe that they are.

We have to come to terms with our sexuality for everything to work out. gay men tend to hide in the shadows unless they are partying. They tend to take jobs that are not in the spotlight as they feel they would be recognized as being gay in these professions. We often come under many types of harrassment in public. I think we all have battered souls so I believe that we have lower self esteem because of it.

Self esteem is a human issue that all of us struggle with in a society that makes us feel that if we aren't perfect, we don't deserve love and happiness.
