I'm not positive which species you are looking at buying, several diferent ones are sold under that common name. In any event, all of them get at least a foot long, some much larger. You would probably be looking at a 125 - 180 gallon tank.

They're schooling fish. They do best in groups and usually die if it's just one fish. They get a foot in length, so any tank smaller than 20gallons will not do once it's full grown.
They're extremely sensitive fish, they get illnesses quickly and it spreads rapidly once they're affected. If you honestly want to get some I would suggest a tank no smaller than 55 gallons. They are semi-aggressive and can be kept with certain gouramis and barbs.

They're EXTREMELY fun fish. I adore my two. They love currents in the water, so they'll usually park themselves in one spot in the tank and spend the entire day swimming in that spot.
