I am on birth control, and I have been for a year now. I've never had a problem before.

But I recently got dianosed with a Urinary Tract infection, and I was perscribed "Sulfamethoxazole".

I was curious if this will neutralize my birth control, and if I have to worry about the possibility of getting pregnant.

I can't seem to get a real answer, and I'm getting a little nervous. And is there gonna be a way to know, before I get (or miss) my period?

i've always been incredibly safe and this was all of a sudden thrown on me, and i think im clueless because i'm a little paniced.

As a healthcare provider I usually tell my patients that recent research has proven that the threat of decreased birth control with the use of antibiotics is not as common as was first believed. It's usually not a problem with the antibiotic you were ordered. If you need to feel more secure, use a condom untill you are off the medication...however, I don't believe its necessary.

Some antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. Your best best is to call the pharmacy to inquire about whether the particular antibiotic you are on will affect the particular birth control you are taking.

Another alternative is to use a back up method of contraception (i.e., a condom) while taking the antibiotics and for 7 days after you stop the antibiotics.

antibiotics lessen the affect of the birth control so you should have a back up method during the time you are on antibiotics.
