Why are studio monitors so expensive?

Just wondering why good studio monitors are so expensive when they are only normally just a 6' speaker

The small monitors are not intended to fill a large room with sound. They are usually placed only 2 or 3 feet from the listening position of the operator, and can provide a pure uncolored sound at that distance. Headphones reproduce great sound from 1 inch speakers, it is because they are even closer to the ear.
