slavery was a huge part of African society way before the Europeans got involved. But, it was a different sort of slavery, and it was rarely lifelong and tortorous.
for them to sell their slaves was a common thing. It was property. But actively seeking slaves just for the sake of slavery wasn't in the picture until later. It was normally a byproduct of debt or conquest.
It was later that some became actual hunters for their fellow africans.

Without question. The arab trade caravans started the practise of trading in slaves for sale in the markets of the Middle East thousands of years ago, some say that it continues to this day.
When the European traders arrived down the African coast in the 15 and 16 centuries they were confronted with an odd situation. They were carrying trade goods, pots and pans and glass baubles, crap mostly, in the hope that they could con the gullible ´primitives´into trading their precious spices and minerals. To their astonishment the only thing the West Africans had to offer were .....West Africans ! It was only the concurrent discovery of the Caribbean and American plantations that prompted an enterprising French ( what else ? ) captain into trying his hand at human cargo. That voyage was, by the way, a commercial disaster, not to mention a human one, nearly all of the cargo died, mostly because the captain and his crew had no idea how to keep them alive.
Unfortunately they soon learned.,
A small detail, the main square in Lagos Nigeria is called Tinubu Sqwuare, after Madam Tinubu, one of the most notorious, and prolific, slave traders of the 19th century, she was Nigerian, of the Yoruba tribe, I believe.

Yes... there were African tribes that sold men and women from other tribes. That was not exactly how slavery started though... Slavery has been around as long as there has been civilization. You really can't put your finger on how it started... it probably started out from warfare, one tribe loses the war but the victor does not have the resources or means to actually dispose of the entire conquered nation.

Hi Mary,, many African tribes captured other tribes and made slaves out of them.. they would sell the people to the Dutch and Spanish and French as slaves to work the plantations of the New World,, I am talking Hati, Dominica, Cuba, Trinidad, way before they began the slave trade in the Americas..

Yes. Africans would attack neighboring tribes and take prisoners. they would then take the prisoners to the Barbary Coast (Northern Africa) where they would be sold to slave traders.
