i have a hamster that i let run free in a room that is empty. there is no furniture or nething but a matress and and old playpen. he is under constant supervision when he is in there so he doesnt chew nething hes not supposed to and so he doesnt get hurt or nething. i was wondering if i could let my rat run in the same room at different times. if you could get back to me asap that would be nice. (please no rude comments/answers. if you arent going to answer my question then dont bother posting a response.) thanks.

Rats are predators as well as prey animals. Your hamster could be in danger of being killed if the rat should ever escape it's cage if you keep both animals in the same room.

Predatory instincts of rats:

That is good that you never free-range them together but, it is stressful for either animal to be out free-ranging and smell the scent of an animal that does not belong in it's territory. Each animal will be in a constant frenzy of marking it's territory over the other's scent.

Hamsters are solitary animals and prefer to live alone. Rats are social creatures and prefer the company of a same-sex cage mate.

There's no reason why you can't, just clean the room in between each animal to prevent spread of illnesses. We house 2 rats, 2 gerbils, a Syrian hamster and a Russian dwarf all next to each other with no problems. The rats are stacked in 2 cages next to the others in 2 more cages. We even mix Syrian hamsters with Russian dwarfs in the same cage (one Syrian per cage however). We've only had the rats 2 weeks today and are still learning about each rats behaviors. We've had some of the Syrians over 2 years.

Having them in a similar room would be basically positive. basically be certain you rats will no longer be able to get out of the cage they're in I hear rats kill off hamsters. I incredibly have my mice, hamsters and garbles in a similar room so it may be basically positive for you. they do no longer recommendations one yet another all of them have there very own tanks so there's no longer any struggling with :D

I don't know anything about rats, but I do know from doing research that mice and hamsters do not get along together...although we have had mice and hamsters in the same room.
We have the run about balls for the hamsters and we have some for the mice, however we never let them run at the same time. Hamsters with hamsters, mice with mice. If you are going to try this, may I suggest getting those balls for your animals and let your hamster have a run before letting the rat out to run.... For safetys sake, I would not let them run at the same time, whether they're in a ball or not. Better to be safe than sorry you know.

Honestly, for the safety of both of your pets I wouldn't. Hamsters are very solitary creatures while rats are very social. Also rats do have a predatory drive, mine have eaten crickets they've caught. So either two things would happen-the hamster would attack the rat or the rat would attack the hamster. I don't think it would be a very good idea.

Actually, yes you can. As long as it is at different times. Do not release these animals at the same time, they will fight and will kill each other. This is a great exercise expeerience for both of them.

i used 2 have alot of pet mice. It depends on the sex. if they are both males, DO NOT put them 2gether, my friend did that and 1 ripped the other one's head off. and if they are a both female or one male one female, let them see each other 1st then slowly go 2 the next step so u do not rush them 2 much.

good luck :)

let them take turns using the room for excercise. check with the vet to see if you can introduce them under supervision to see if they can be friends. stranger things have happened
