On a more mundane level, maps and being able to read them correctly is essential for census takers.
Truck drivers, especially OTR (over the road) drivers rely on maps to get to unfamiliar areas in the best and fastest way. Also all delivery type jobs.
All types of emergency personel such as 911 responders, firemen, policemen, even politicians need maps.
