What about some foam cutouts? It is very light so they would still be able to move and can easily be cut to shape and painted? Good luck.

Have them wear green pants and turtle neck shirts. Then, take a peice of brown material, camo would be cute too, and make like a little dress kinda...know what I mean. Put straps on it like overalls, and buttons, but dont close the legs up..make it a dress. Then, get a headband, and glue or staple (but they might rub)felt or light material shaped leaves to it.

TRUNK & BRANCHES:
brown sweatpants
brown sweatshirt
Paint "bark" markings on them with fabric paint or markers if you wish. See links below or look at A.C. Moore craft stores.
BRANCHES:
brown gloves
green foam or felt "leaves" (glued or stitched onto the fingers)
Try the 'one-size-fits all' type at Walmart or KMart - or see link below.
LEAVES:
"nylon umbrella hats" (see link below)
Paint (spray or craft acrylic) them solid dark green, and glue foam or felt leaves of various greens onto them. Might need to add an elastic chin-strap to keep them on little heads.
The kids can help by cutting out the leaves, and/or painting "veins" on them.

have them dress in brown/black pants and shirts and buy sheets of green shades (and yellow, red and other fall colours) of fun foam. Cut large leaves of various kinds and sew them on to the clothes and on dowels that the kids can hold in their hands and wave.

paper towel rolls, attach with safety pins to sleeves, glue on felt leaves. longish dark brown cotton shirts. try hats with braches for greater effect. children can also have green 'vine' streamers attached to their wrists which will help show off arm movements when dancing.

You could have your child dress in all brown and then get a really big afro wig from like a party city store or somewhere and spray it green

My son has a tunnel toy - that would have potential for the job, I think they have different sizes, but I don't know how many you need or what your budget is... most of them are like $25-$35, but you can use or sell them afterwards... http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002-4579648-2035209?url=search-alias%3Dtoys-and-games&field-keywords=tunnel&Go.x=11&Go.y=11&Go=Go
