My Betta fish, Sushi, had an internal infection. Apparently I stopped medicating too soon because he began to swell up again. He has rapid gill movement but all tests show that his water quality is fine. I have a filter and the water is heated to 82 degrees. Could the "gasping" be because of the relapse?

I am treating him with Maracyn and Maracyn 2. He lives in a two gallon tank.

Please help!

Sushi does not have carbon in his filter, so that's not an issue.

He improved dramatically when I began the Maracyn/Maracyn 2 combo. I have put him back on it and I am praying that he will come around.

The sad thing is that he looks, physically, so much better. I just wish he felt better.

It's quite possible that it's because of a relapse, if so continuing the treatment for the full course this time should take care of it. Keep a very close watch on his water quality while you treat though. Those medications will kill the bacteria in your tank and make you need to cycle the tank again, so the ammonia will probably jump up. Also be sure to remove the carbon from the filter while you treat.

If it is an internal infection, you may wish to consider medicated food too. My goldy got a fungus infection. I treated him for about 6 weeks with Maracyn and then went for 4 weeks with salt before I felt really comfortable with the way he looked. Of course, this was in an outdoor pond where I didn't have much control over the heat, which affects length of treatment. But, nevertheless, treatment can take a long time sometimes, so just be patient and diligent. It sounds like you're doing a really good job with everything. Take care!

It sounds like your betta has a systemic bacterial disease, which Maracyn is not necessarily going to help. Few meds will rid a bacteria completely, so there is always a possibility of re-infection. This site below had some very good explanations and treatment options. Good luck.
