I'm not sure how old you are, or where you live, but I would definitely go to : www.teenreads.com.
Even if you aren't a teen, you can find some wonderful books there (I've found so many of my favourite books through it) and you can read reviews about books.
Next, try the websites of publishers such as Random House, Push (publisher of some of the best books in my opinion www.thisispush.com) or look at the publisher of your favourite books, and search them.
Finally, talk to friends about their favourite authors. I can give you some recommendations:
• *ANYTHING by Kevin Brooks (I highly highly reccomend Lucas, my favourite book of all time... it's incedibly written, and the plot is riveting)
• *The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
• *Go Ask Alice
• the Fearless books by Francine Pascal
Those are pretty much my favourite books/authors. Like I said, I highly reccomend Lucas. It is too amazing for words, and it's totally not a trashy novel. It's heartbraking, slightly disturbing at points, and completely envelloping. I love the book. (oh and the ones with *s beside them are ones that I highly recommend, but can be disturbing at parts)
I hope this helped!

Books on amazon.com have links to other, similar books.
There is a book/electronic reference called What Do I Read Next? you can use at libraries. If you have a library card, a lot of libraries will let you access their electronic references from home.
Look on the back of books you like. Publishers usually get similar authors to write publicity blurbs for each other.
Check with your local librarian. They are usually excellent at recommending books based on what you have already read and liked.
Post the titles or characteristics of books you like here and see what you get.
