It makes them believe you harbor good feelings toward them, and they act friendly, then you can get close to them and learn their secrets. Unless they're doing the same just to get back at you.

You have heard the saying, "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer." ? Well, I'm sure it has something to do with that. If you are friendly to the enemy, you are more able to keep tabs on what they are up to.

Depends on the type of smile:

Genuine smile to win them over
Sadistic smile to put them at unrest
Polite smile to show good manners
Grin big to say "gotcha"
